The End Of A Cycle, Rebuilding Needed - Rijkaard

With the dust from the 4-0 defeat to Getafe settling, Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has insisted that his resolve to take the team back to the top has not been affected. However, he admitted that a winning team needs to be re-built again.

The Barcelona coach has admitted that the life of this current team could be at an end, and that nothing but a full reconstruction was needed.

"We are planning to construct a great team of which our partners can be proud," said Rijkaard on a Catalan radio show.

"All the great teams in the history of the sport have played at a great level for three or four years. Then there have always been changes, be they in coaches or players."

"Before the start of the season, we decided to have confidence in the same group to win things again. Because they have been together for three years, and already won many titles together, now is the moment to reflect whether that can continue."

"This team has done a lot, and given it a lot of happiness, but the time has come to plan for the future and make changes."

My Future Is Here

Rijkaard also reiterated his desire to be a part of that future.

"My future is my present," he said. "It is an honor to work for this club, and right now, it is important to finish with dignity.

"My ideas have not changed due to the defeat or the criticism. I am not a coward."

Looking at possible summer moves, he refused to give out details, but admitted that the work had already begun: "Barça are a club always progressing, a club to which many players love to come. The club continues to move looking towards next season.

"However, before that, we must finish with pride, in the best possible way. We cannot remain in the current state, and need to react. We must all improve."

So there, the cat has been let out of the bag, with the coach having admitted publicly that an overhaul is what Barcelona need. It remains to be seen who will leave, and who will not, and also how the speculation will affect the team at such a crucial stage of the season, particularly with Real Madrid coming on strong.

Cornered Rijkaard Calls For Response

Speaking to the press on the eve of the game against Real Betis, Frank Rijkaard fielded some called for the team to respond to Thursday's humiliating defeat.

"Thursday was a tough night, but we have to move on," said the Dutchman.

"We portrayed a bad image. We owe the fans and the club. We have to win back their confidence. The fans are important to us and we know it is up to us to do something in order to receive their support.

Asked about the team's challenge for the title, he was terse: "I don’t speak of results because the team will win what it deserves.

"All the players want to win, but we have to suffer, fight and react on pitch."

Rijkaard was then questioned about his control over the team. "All opinions have to be respected," he said. "We’ve always worked in a way we’ve seen right. When something doesn’t work, decisions have to be made.

"Up until now, we have been satisfied. However, we know very well what we need to do in order to make our fans happy.

"Betis are a difficult team. We have to concentrate and achieve our objectives: win points, win difficult games, and make our fans happy.

"These are reasons enough for us to concentrate on what we have to do."

There have been suggestions that the coach and the team could be booed by the Camp Nou, and president Joan Laporta has made a personal plea to the fans.

"I request all the fans to be with the team, because they deserve it," he said. "All the great teams in history have suffered great defeats.

"I trust this team. It is these players and this coach who have given us everything. Now, they will do everything possible to give us another League title."

and good morning , by the way :p
good morning;)
i was disappointed in the players performance , barca fans said to the players in friday training that they were money grabbers and that they were lazy
Rijkaard must be either drug tested or given an IQ test after this game.
can we plead temporary insanity and demand a rematch??
i hope this result makes barca respond in a good win today

ELayyan, I am a barca fan my self too. But, looking into Rijkard's statement it makes me feel down. Rijkard has proven that he isn't a tactician. He loses against such team. Take Chelsea and Liverpool for instance.

Another point is that, at the winter break, JOHAN CRUYFF him self has written a very similar article, explaining that the Team's Cycle has ended and they must re-invest in new players. Result, FCB renewed the contracts, of GIO, Beletti, Oliguer and all others who have expired!

Rijkard paid a huge price for underestimating Bernd Schuster's team! After securing a 5-2 game.

Sometimes, I wonder if Rijkard is an actual Manager, or is he just a bubble. He's always nice, and easy going and I think he plays on the elemnt that other teams dont act on stopping barca, but how to attack them only. That might be the beauty of Spanish Liga after all. Everybody attacks :)

so you are barca and juve fan like me.
i dont rate FR that high as a coach , i think his assistant who is now Ajax coach is more experienced than him and his departure is one of the reasons for the conditions that barca is now since FR dont know how to handle and motivate the players and you could see his un-expericence in the 4-0 defeat , i mean why you play the first team and all the match dont do anything when you see them play like shit instead he should played with bench players like saviola who would played better
note: please zambrotta go back to Juve , you dont fit in the liga
