MADRID, Spain (AP) -Real Madrid lost its first match in the Spanish league on Saturday, going down 1-0 to crosstown rival Getafe on defender Alexis Ruano's 59th-minute header.

Ruano rose above Madrid defender Raul Bravo to score moments after goalkeeper Iker Casillas had stopped a shot from midfielder Manuel del Moral at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium. :disagree:

Madrid substitute Ronaldo was sent off in the 90th minute for two yellow cards.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello gave David Beckham a start and employed Antonio Cassano in a five-man midfield behind Ruud van Nistelrooy as the sole striker.

Most of the early pressure came from Getafe who created three good chances in the first 15 minutes. Casillas punched away a powerful right-footed shot by Francisco Casqueroin in the 36th.

In the second half, Capello replaced Cassano and Mahamadou Diarra for Ronaldo and Raul Gonzalez.

With Madrid due to face FC Barcelona next week and Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League, Fabio Cannavaro rested his minor knee injury. :irritated

With a game to play Sunday, Barcelona leads the standings on 13 points and a better goal difference than Valencia. Sevilla is third with 12, while Real Madrid is on 11. Getafe is eighth on 10. :confused2

Capello substituted Beckham with Robinho in the 68th.

Getafe could have scored again in the 72nd minute when midfielder Alberto Aguilar just missed a cross from defender Javier Paredes in front of an open goal.

Tennis player Rafa Nadal, who is due to play next week in the Madrid Masters championship, was in the stands to watch the derby. :cool2:

Madrid had its only clear chance in the third minute of injury time when Robinho hit a right-footed shot across the goal.

On Sunday it's FC Barcelona vs. Sevilla, Celta Vigo vs. Valencia, Villarreal vs. Espanyol, Levante vs. Mallorca, Real Sociedad vs. Zaragoza, Real Betis vs. Deportivo, Gimnastic Tarragona vs. Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna vs. Racing Santander. :crybaby:

Ronnie is back to form apparently. And its at the best time :D, when they have Chelseaa next

yup its on the 18th right? i hope its as good as last years. it was a superb match to be honest. i wish they could've met in later stages instead of the group stage but this makes the chances of them meeting in the final a probable situation.

Cannavaro: "We Have To Emulate Chelsea Against Barcelona"

Fabio Cannavaro has it clear how the Merengues should approach the upcoming weekend Superclásico against Catalan arch-rivals FC Barcelona at the Bernabéu: the whites have to hit the Blaugranas like the Blues did last night.

"Chelsea was stronger than Barcelona, they went after the ball with more speed and desire to get there first and they almost always did. It’s going to be a very special game between two strong teams; like a Juve-Milan or a Juve-Inter”, he commented about his first Superclásico.

“It’s a match that any player would like the opportunity to play and I followed them [the derbies] very closely when I was in Italy. Now I hope to really be of help as we win on Sunday as I’m raring to go against Barcelona", he added.

As to Barça, Fabio praised Ronaldinho and minimised the absence of injured Samuel Eto'o. "Barcelona has a load of quality players. If they can’t field Eto'o they’ve got Gudjohnsen, Messi and Ronaldinho. We know that Ronaldinho is currently the best player in the world but we fully intend to stop him from getting in on the game", explained the centre-back.

He also made it clear that he wants to avoid the sort of ‘Bernabéu Boogie’ that Sergio Ramos and Iván Helguera were forced to dance by an inspired Dinho last season. "When you’re in front of a player like that any defender just prays and does their best, but this year it will be different as we’ve got a new team and new tactics”, he underlined.

He also commented on Real Madrid’s rollercoaster ride between the lows of Getafe y and the highs of Bucharest and the ample win over Steaua. “It’s normal in football that you have to take the rough with the smooth and we talked a lot about Getafe. I think the results were clear in Romania and that’s the sort of result we always want.”
