Joining the vast stream of articles and opinions regarding the upcoming World Cup and its contestants, here's a composed interview with Leo Beenhakker, national coach of Trinidad and Tobago:

Leo Beenhakker thinks the euforia surrounding the English World Cup team is highly misplaced. The Dutch coach of Trinidad and Tobago doesn't value the English much at all.

"England has great players, one of the strongest domestic leagues in the world and a population of over fifty million people. Yet the only thing they put on display at major tournaments is failure. Those players should be prepared for and experienced in everything, but they never amount to anything", Beenhakker commented, "And yet again they are being labelled as one of the favourites, but I can't see them get very far."

The Dutchman opened his provocing speech after Trinidad and Tobago had been defeated by Wales with two goals to one: "We have a lot of work to do", he admitted, "But there's a big difference between friendlies and the real thing."

Beenhakker and his Soca Warriors will face England in the second group match, but he doesn't want to make any predictions: "The only thing I hear is England, England, England. I haven't joined that camp yet. There's still Sweden we have to face first."

Beenhakker continued to hack his way through displays of optimism, moving from England to Holland: "The Dutch national team is made up of two or three good players and a whole lot of players that would never have made the national team a decade ago. Hard work will only get you so far, I don't think the Dutch will progress into the latter stages of the World Cup."

Well... its true... People bitching about what our media puts out... dont like it dont fucking read... You all have your own media to read / watch

Funny i dont see anyone here bitching about other world cup countries media... Look at the italian media at the moment... constant references to 82, comparisons between toni and rossi... A world cup final that i have noticed being shown on 5 seperate occasions in the last 3 weeks etc etc

What do people expect from any country that has a team that expects to do reasonably well...

Its ridiculous... Dont like other peoples media... look at your own and stop bitching about it

But by the same token, Paul, you of all people would know that media outlets do not stop at the customs gates. As an extreme example, American media penetration of the world is unquestionable ... and it's a core reason that has lead to minimum Canadian TV programming quotas in Canada and French language requirements in France.

Now British media may not be the juggernaut that the U.S. media can be. But when it comes to football in the English language, coverage and influence is certainly not going to be dominated by American media.

So what much of the English-speaking, football-watching world gets is a heavy dose of British media. On the one hand, why not? -- the British have obviously contributed much to the sport. But on the other hand, the arrogance and complete lack of humility on behalf of most British media when it comes to the England NT borders on George-Bush-style cowboy swaggering hubris. And it spills over national borders like water.

If you've got the microphone, and because people cannot practically edit out the British media bits in their exposure, you've earned the right to be publicly dressed down as egomaniac blowhards.

I love Europe's lingual diversity. The first time I ever read an English newspaper was after I had already been living in England for a good month...

Whilst media doesnt stop at borders... It is everyones choice whether to read / watch it or not... and the fact is no one has the right to complain or whinge about what we write about our own national team... In almost all cases... if you dont like it dont read it... Every country has its own media... read that..

Of course there are exceptions... eg. scotland wgho have no choice but to look to our media as they have little of their own and as such they do have to put up with a certain inequality...

The same can be said for canadians as you pointed out and to certain degree americans form us when it comes to football... But virtually everyone else has decent media coverage... they have no reason to read ours and if they do they have no right to moan that we support our country over all others... jus as the italians, french, germans spaniards etc do...

I mean , why is it that people rely on english media to read about italian football? If you care that much as you say you do... learn the language and read the media of the country that is relevant to ones desires...

So your basically saying because others read our media we are not allowed to support and encourage our team the same as every other country does... get real

Now British media may not be the juggernaut that the U.S. media can be. But when it comes to football in the English language, coverage and influence is certainly not going to be dominated by American media.
Not our problem... Our media is designed to serve our people (as everyones is),

If you've got the microphone, and because people cannot practically edit out the British media bits in their exposure, you've earned the right to be publicly dressed down as egomaniac blowhards.
The majority can edit it out... in reality they have no reason to even look at it...
But even if they cant.. The overriding fact is we can , will and should support our nt in our media however the fuck we please...

If other countries do not have their own in depth media... its their problem not ours... There is nothing in our media that you dont see in the spanish, german, italian etc etc news... Difference being not so many from outside read it... Again not our problem... Why should we dumb our support down to appease foreign readers... we shouldnt as the italians etc shouldnt dumb theirs down either

I think you're only seeing half of this, Paul. Just as you can legitimately argue (and you can), "Don't complain about what's in our media" on behalf of the England NT ... what business is it of anyone else's who they get to complain about?

It's almost like two sides of the same coin. "If you don't like British media coverage of the England NT, get your own." versus "If you don't want to hear our complaints about your media, don't listen to them."
