Yes it was quite boring. It was clear for everyone to see that it was a pre-season friendly as neither side put in the effort they would have put in if it was a competitive match. Chelsea were definitely the better team though and Robben took his goal well. Vieri was one of if not the worst player on the pitch.

The top three clubs in the Premiership continued their triangular war of words today with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon the latest to go on the offensive.

The ex-Manchester United man is aggrieved at the way he feels the Premiership champions are being victimised following anti-Chelsea outbursts from the United and Arsenal camps in recent weeks.

The three clubs have clashed over transfer deals, notably the Ashley Cole tapping up affair and the tug of war over Nigerian youngster John Obi Mikel.

"It is born out of hypocrisy and fundamental insecurity," Kenyon said.

And in a possible slight at the maturity of throwing insults at your rivals, Kenyon went on to liken the two clubs to kids, albeit youngsters 'on the block.'

"There have been two kids on the block for 12 years. Now there is suddenly a third kid threatening to be more successful. They don't like it."

"That is what this nonsense is about. They are trying to blow us off course, they are trying to blow us away from our plans and stop us winning.

"Is it disrupting us? Not really, but it is time consuming. But it is not going to stop us from being a successful club. We have to accept it but we don't like it."

Again, expect this one to run, and run, and run.........

Spurs announce Davids deal

Tottenham are set to seal the signing of Dutch star Edgar Davids from Internazionale.

The 32-year-old has fallen out of favour with Inter coach Roberto Mancini and the Nerazzurri have agreed to release him on a free transfer.

Spurs coach Martin Jol is delighted to be on the cusp of landing his fellow countryman.

"He is one of the most versatile midfielders, a playmaker, a ball-winner with great stamina and huge charisma and one of the best midfielders to come out of Holland in the last 10 years," said Jol.

"This is a player who went to Barcelona when they were middle of the league and took them close to winning the title.

"It's terrific that he is joining us. This is the player we have spoken about who will lift the team's performance. We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and I believe Edgar will come in and lead by example."

Davids, who has 70 Dutch caps to his name, is anxious to secure first team football in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

The Surinam-born star will arrive in England in the next 24 hours to finalise personal terms and undergo a routine medical at White Hart Lane.

England will be the fourth country Davids has played in his illustrious career after spells in Holland with Ajax, Italy with Juventus, Inter and Milan, and Spain with Barcelona.

Both Everton and Middlesbrough had shown an interest in Davids earlier in the summer, but the lure of London looks to have won the day

I hope all the best for Davids, now that he has left Inter Im sure he can find his form back

Erm, Arsenal fans sorry o, Madrid just signed El Toro...

Real Madrid CF have signed attacking midfield player Julio Baptista from Sevilla FC in a deal that could be worth up to €24.5m to the Andalusian club.

Third recruit
Although the terms of the 23-year-old's contract are yet to be disclosed, the Brazilian international has become Madrid's third summer signing following the arrivals of Uruguayan international duo Pablo García and Carlos Diogo.

'Logical decision'
Sevilla chairman Jose María Del Nido said of the move: "The only logical decision was to sell him." Sevilla will receive an initial €20m from Madrid with the remainder of the fee being performance-related.

Scoring sensation
Baptista, who had attracted the public interest of Arsenal FC, joined Sevilla from São Paulo FC in a €2.75m transfer two summers ago. Initially considered an orthodox midfielder, he took a more attacking role in the Primera División, scoring 20 goals in 30 games in his first Spanish season, before registering 18 times in the league and five times in the UEFA Cup in 2004/05.

Manchester United are poised to make a sensational swoop for Real Madrid striker Michael Owen after the Spanish club revealed the door was open for the former Liverpool player to return to the Premiership. United boss Alex Ferguson will make a €16 million bid, according to reports.

Owen, who scored 16 goals for Real last season, has been pushed down the pecking order at the Spanish giants after the signings of Brazilians Robinho and Julio Baptista.

And the 25-year-old will be available to return to England if United can meet the €16 million buy-out clause in Owen's contract.

A senior source told British paper The Sunday Times they would not stand in Owen's way should they receive a bid for him.

"Michael is popular with the fans and he is popular with the club," said the source.

"But if he comes to us and says he believes the best thing for him is to leave, we will have to respect that."

"He has been a great servant to us, we will treat him with the utmost decency and respect," he added.

"And in the event that he decides to go, while obviously looking out for our own interests, we will be sure to look out for his too."

Now surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu with Real's two new signings and Ronaldo and Raul both fighting for places, Owen could find himself reduced to fifth choice if he remains in the Spanish capital.

Having already been linked with former club Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle, Owen's advisers gave his old club first refusal on bringing their former hero back to Anfield.

But Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez seems to have rejected the opportunity, opting instead for Southampton striker Peter Crouch in a €10m deal.

Despite running the risk of feeling his former fans' wrath, Owen could be tempted by the United move, which would allow him to live in his luxury North Wales mansion he renovated only one hour's drive away from United's training ground.

Having lost out to Real in the Baptista saga, Arsenal could also be tempted to make a move.
