I didn't know which section to put this in, im just interested how people feel on the issue given that a lot of news sites have been posting on information hoarding, targetted advertising & avoidance techniques.

As we are all media & tech savvy types who have adblock/scriptblock/vpns I imagine it wont affect anyone on here as much as 'joe bloggs'.

The key argument that is floating around is that companies such as google & facebook are gaining so much information and revenue that they could become a powerful entity of their own should they choose too. Google of course have the motto 'Don't be evil'...and if they say that it must be true. (this sounds like im going on the verge of conspiracy).

But think about the information you give to google.

They know everything that is searched from your IP, they know what video you watch on youtube from your IP. If you have an account with google they know what your emails say, what comments you post and what you are discussing, they have the ability to track your text messages. etc. They have mapped the world...down your street. And they are insanely rich.

Facebook knows everything about your life, they own every photo you upload & can (and will) give this information to law enforcement agencies on request (read their abuse policies).

They have more information than most governments.

I don't personally feel it is being used or will be used for 'corrupt' purposes (although i find targetted advertising horrifying).

Heres a nice little video (skip to the last minute if you just want to hear about google).

And a summary link -

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/03/t...o-muddy-your-tracks-on-the-internet.html?_r=2

I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy nut but this is real - everything we do on the internet without a vpn (and if you are using torrents your ip it trackable) can be tracked to us and is being stored, currently to advertise but who knows in the future.

Thoughts? (mods move if appropriate).

Just kidding.

I can't see how their powers would effect my daily life. Therefore, it doesn't really bother me.
