My Review.
First off, I'll say that it's not as heavy as their previous album. And that is by no means a criticism!
That's a good thing. Of course, the album includes those trademark Chino screams. Then it would'nt be a proper Deftones album if that wasn't the case. It seems this album is very similar to the Team Sleep sound, and songs like Dai The Flu, Be Quiet and Drive, Digital Bath, Change (In the house of flies), Knife Party, Teenager, Minerva, Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event. There are no songs that resemble the previously mentioned sound-wise, but style-wise.
Anyway, I'm probably not the best of reviewers....but here's my two cents.
1. Hole in the Earth - This is a superb opener with a kick ass opening, cool verse, and awesome chorus! This is one of my fave tracks on the album. It doesn't sound like anything Deftones have previously released. Truly original track. :strong:
2. Rapture - This is a heavy song, with some heavy drumming, riffs, catchy bass-line, and a spooky sounding tune (synthesizer/keyboard?) that mixes in towards the last chorus. It plays out well...and is stuck in my head.
3. Beware - Chilled out song. Chino mixes his soothing voice with his high pitched shriek/wail...but not to a hardcore extent. Great progession throughout the song. The chorus mix of vocals + guitars + drumming is brilliant. Probably my favorite track on the CD. :stoned:
4. Cherry Waves - Also a slow tempo song, with beautiful chorus. Probably one of the more emotional tracks I've heard from Deftones. I liked this one alot.
5. Mein - Mid-Fast tempo this one, with a somewhat mysterious guitar riff. Serj's singing is minimal, much to my surprise. I was looking forward to this track, anticipating some of Serj's typical wierd noises or something...but this man by the way is blessed with an awesome voice for slow songs. And he did just that on this song. As opposed to Maynard's feature in Passenger where he used both styles of his vocal ability (soft and screaming...which is what I was expecting from Serj). "Two Thumbs Up" from me!
6. U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start - This is from a Nintendo game, for those who've played Contra. No lyrics, just some music. Nothing spectacular though, it's...OK. But that's about it. :undecide:
7. Xerces - Here we go back to the ambient slow rock which is a recurrent theme/sound in this album. Very good song...and how many times have I said this so far - great chorus

And I have no idea why they decided to name a song off something in IT terminology. :wth:
8. Rats!Rats!Rats! - Well I know I said in the beginning that none of the songs here sound like previous Deftones songs, but the drumming here at the start of the song reminded me of Adranaline a bit. The screaming too. Something along the lines of Lhabia and Hexagram from the last album. Definitely the heaviest song on the album.
9. Pink Cellphone - This is a cool song. Very untypical and unexpected of Deftones. Not bad. :cap:
10. Combat - Appropriately named, the song begins aggressively with Chino screaming "Who's side are you on" and awesome drumming. What I like about the heavy songs on this album is that Chino mixes his normal ambient voice with the screams. So we get the best of both, and end up with a good song like this one. :drunk:
11. Kimdracula - No idea what a Kimdracula is. Nevertheless, this sounds like an original alternative rock song and is very catchy.
12. Riviere - Ambient slow song. Theres a guitar part which sounds like bit from "Digital Bath". I didn't like that in this song. It begins well, but I didn't like how it all combined as it plays through. I just hate that "Digital Bath" part in this song. (no I don't hate DB...lol...I dunno that part sounded odd). If you're wondering listen from the beginning when he says "She waits for a
new face"...it's just, not in place. It keeps carrying on at 3:05-3:25.....
Anyhow, there had to be a song which I wouldn't like...and that was it, I guess. Maybe it'll grow on me. In any case, this is overall a good album, for the fan, and for those unfamiliar with the band might enjoy this one.
Oh yeah, and what's up with the Arabic text towards the end of the booklet?
Finally here's a dorky picture of myself holding the CD.
