Three Emiratis, including two UAE Football League players, were sentenced to death on Tuesday after Sharjah courts found them guilty of murdering an Emirati man in May last year.
Sharjah football club defender Fayez Jumah, his brother Musa Jumah and Mohammad Murjan, who plays for another UAE club, were all charged along with three others with the murder of Jasem Yousif in Sharjah on May 16 after a fight broke out.
The charge sheet indicates that the defendants used swords and knives to slash the victim’s face and stabbed him several times until he bled to death.
Musa Jumah was also charged with consuming liquor, which is prohibited in Sharjah.
The victim’s lawyer, Abdul Hamid Al Kumity, confirmed the ruling and stated that he is expecting an appeal to be filed by the defendants.
Six other defendants were given jail time of between one and three years for failing to report the crime.
They were also charged with attempting to conceal evidence, Musa Juma’s blood-soaked clothes, and for attempting to smuggle the defendant outside the country to escape prosecution.
This decision is the second court ruling against a footballer this year.
On February 16, a UAE court sentenced Al Nasr Club player Salah Abbas to three years in jail after he was found guilty of endangering a life in Dubai for firing a pistol in the air.

It's distressing to imagine someone you've known and seen him playing to be hanged, isn't it?
