Sea rescue for 'drunk' Freddie

From Julian Guyer in Gros Islet, St Lucia | Sunday, March 18, 2007

Several England World Cup players have been fined for a "breach of team discipline." it was announced yesterday.

And a British Sunday newspaper claims drunk vice-captain Andrew Flintoff had to be rescued at sea at 4am.

Team spokesman Andy Walpole said in a statement the breach took place here Friday, following England's six-wicket defeat by New Zealand in its opening Group C match at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

The players - understood to be James Anderson, Ian Bell, Jon Lewis and Liam Plunkett - were, a source said, fined for a late night drinking session at the Rumours Nightclub near the team hotel in St Lucia.

They had been out late ahead of the second game with Canada, a match England must win to qualify for the second phase, Super Eight stage of the tournament.

Fans who witnessed events then contacted several British newspapers to tell them what they'd seen.

Back in England, the News of the World, the country's biggest-selling Sunday newspaper, said vice-captain Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff had been involved in a separate incident of his own.

Under a file picture of Flintoff in cricket gear with a bottle of beer and the caption: "Bender: Flintoff", it carried the headline "Ship-faced Freddie in shock 4am sea rescue."

Its back-page headline, "Sunk 'n' Drunk - Freddie fined after pedalo booze shame," topped a story saying Flintoff had to be rescued at 4am after capsizing at sea following, what it said, was England's "disastrous" defeat to New Zealand.

Rival tabloid The Mail on Sunday quoted an unnamed English fan saying: "It seems extraordinary that hours after losing the biggest one-day game of their careers and 30 hours before playing in a match they cannot afford to lose, they are out drinking until the small hours. I don't blame the players but how could the management have sanctioned that?"

Other players who were also reportedly out are believed to have avoided disciplinary action because of their earlier return to the hotel.

Tthe players are not subject to a formal curfew, the general view of coach Duncan Fletcher being that what his squad get up to beyond the boundary is not a matter for him provided it doesn't interfere with their cricket.

The breach was reported to the England team management at breakfast time yesterday, and the decision to fine the players involved taken at a subsequent team meeting, attended by the whole squad and management.

Walpole refused to name the players involved, the extent of their fines, or the exact nature of the breach

Pakistan coach Woolmer dies

The cricket World Cup has been rocked by the news that Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer has died in hospital after being found unconscious in his Jamaican hotel room.

Woolmer, 58, was found on the floor of his room at the Pegasus Hotel unconscious at 10.45am on Sunday morning.

The former England test player was last season at the press conference following Pakistan's shock World Cup exit at the hands of Ireland.

After being found in his hotel - just a short distance from the Sabina Park ground, Woolmer was taken to the emergency department of the University Hospital in Kingston.

Woolmer was discovered with signs of vomiting, but as yet no explanations for his collapse have been released.

"Robert Andrew Woolmer has passed away today and the entire Pakistan team and management are shocked and saddened by his passing," team spokesman Parvez Mir said reading a statement.

"His next of kin have been informed and we extend our deepest condolences to his family. The chairman of the PCB has also been informed.

"There will be a coroner's inquest and in keeping with Jamaican law an autopsy will take place into his death.

"Further information will be released by the PCB at the earliest opportunity once it has been received from the hospital."

Mir added: "Hotel staff found him about 1030. He had blood on him and there was vomit on the walls."

Mir also revealed that Woolmer suffered from a medical condition - but said it was too early to say whether it played a part in his death.

Hours after he was admitted to hospital, the sad news of Woolmer's death was released - a tragic development which overshadows Pakistan's World Cup demise.

Woolmer, who was born in India, played Test cricket for England and made a successful move into coaching with Warwickshire, South Africa and then Pakistan.

Woolmer has endured difficult recent times with Pakistan, including the infamous forfeited Test in England and the ensuing ball-tampering row.

The drugs scandal involving Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif overshadowed both the ICC Champions Trophy and the build-up to the World Cup.

One of the favourites to go on and lift the trophy, Pakistan then went out after just five days of the tournament after losing to Ireland.

One of the most well-respected coaches in the world, Woolmer had been strongly linked with taking over from Duncan Fletcher as England coach as his contract with the PCB expired after the World Cup.

    RIP Bob.

I'm so sad right now. I've been watching his tributes and the video of the players reactions. Really really sad.

R.I.P. Bob Wolmer. I hope they catch those responsible for your death.
It said on the news today that he was strangled & it was reported that he was going to blow the lid off corruption & match-fixing & that he may have been killed to stop him.

pakistan never seem to stop making problems and making themselves bigger than the game itself.
Dude, wtf are you talking about? I've had it with your uber-australian attitude about the game. It's close to the Nazi German view on their superiority. You should probably have this problem looked up.

The Jamaican police has confirmed that Bob was murdered, and it was an inside job because there was too much security around the hotel for someone else to do it.Im guessing that someone working at the hotel got paid big cash to do it.Bob was about to reveal something huge about the match fixing bit in his book, and those very pages got stolen from him room, along with his laptop. It all points to the gambling mafia.
