Coppa: Juve defenders crumble Friday 19 November, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two uncharacteristic defensive errors caused Juve’s first Cup defeat of the campaign as Atalanta triumph with an Andrea Lazzari brace.

Fabio Capello rested several star players for the Bianconeri’s Coppa debut, but European Player of the Year Pavel Nedved was in the starting eleven. The Czech made an immediate impact, as two early efforts were well saved by goalkeeper Alex Calderoni.

Nicola Legrottaglie made his comeback from injury and performed several important challenges on Luca Saudati, but Atalanta stepped up a gear after the break and tested Antonio Chimenti with Saudati’s stop and volley.

The deadlock was eventually broken by the home side on the hour mark. Mark Iuliano’s defensive error allowed Andrea Lazzari to break free and the Under-21 international took two attempts to finally beat Chimenti with a left-foot finish.

Lazzari was making the most of this opportunity and nearly bagged an identical second soon after, but this time Chimenti flew to keep the scoreline down.

Olivier Kapo’s low drive skimmed the woodwork, but another rare slip-up at the back cost Juve dearly. Substitute Lilian Thuram hesitated and Lazzari pounced once again to score his second of the match.

Thuram nearly made up for his error soon after, though he gathered a free kick and slammed it on to the crossbar from close range.

Juventus could still turn it all around in the second leg at the Delle Alpi, but were fortunate that Igor Budan's third goal was disallowed for offside.

yes, just Coppa!!!

but it proved that guys like Legro can still be useful and that players like Iuliano are finished! they are even not good enough for a team like Juve! time to bring fresh blood in the defence!

Well I can tell you one thing, you are seen the last game of Iuliano in Juve...:D
I agree, I don´t want to see him again at juve..
It was a teriblle game form juve.. so slow, shaky defence.. I rememberd juve of last season.. we did not have any real chance, and were lucky not to lose 3-0 , because Atalanta scored another regular goal, not given for offside
. Juliano and Brindely were really terible. Appiah lost too many balls..
I just hope that this defeat does not effect Juve in the next matches.

A demonstration that rai's journalists rate the players without seeing the matches, and I'm not joking. Before a milan match this season (the one where Dida has been sent off), sky showed the portable pc of a journalist at the stadium, that had a word document open with the rates of the players (If I remember well Dida had a 6,5 or so, there). Too bad that the game had still to be played :wallbang: )

Anyway,

http://www.raisport.rai.it/raiSportSezioneIndex/0,5785,_78_105_8695,00.html

Juventus (4-4-2): Chimenti 6, Birindelli 5.5 (39' st Blasi sv), Ferrara 6, Legrottaglie 5 (26' st Thuram 5.5), Iuliano 6, Olivera 5.5, Tacchinardi 6, Appiah 6, Nedved 6 (22' st Volpato 5.5), Zalayeta 5.5, Kapo 5. (22 Bonnefoi, 34 Masiello, 36 De Ceglie, 40 Bentivoglio). Allenatore: Capello 5.

Reading this, I'm happy to tell u, that Iuliano has been our best defender (with Ferrara) :D

..

....

Well i'm not really bothered by the loss...it's just Coppa(never really cared about....)yeah yeah...i know silver star but....

We can still go trough, well as you said it proved Iuliano and Legro not good enough for first team...i say use Montero and Ferrara in the reurn leg.

It's pity to lose, but i'm sure it will not effect on our first team...with our first normal line up,we are a completly different team.

Forza Juve!

At least better than risking out key players to be injured.

I hope that Nedved is ok. But I'm not that concerned bout that loss anyway
