Blatter talks of two referees - PA Sport

FIFA president Sepp Blatter wants to pursue the idea of using two referees in matches in the near future.

Several officials have come in for criticism at the World Cup in Germany with a number of high-profile incidents taking the attention away from the match itself.

Blatter believes bringing in a second referee will help eradicate mistakes and reduce controversy.

"We observe the situation in ice hockey, for instance, with two referees and two assistants on a much smaller arena and they have no [personality] clashes with the players because they know the game," said Blatter.

"At the beginning there was a reluctance to consider the system."

"Then we had tests conducted in Malaysia and Sao Paulo, Brazil, with encouraging results, but an unsatisfactory reaction in Norway and Italy."

"But now we are facing a situation in the game where the pace is such that we must ask if there should be a further experiment."

I actually think this strategy will backfire. The problem with refs hasn't been missed calls -- it's been calls that are too aggressive at times, disrupting play and taking the pace of the match out of the hands of players and putting it into the hands of referees. Adding more refs to a situation where the refs are showing too much authority overall is a bad, bad thing.

This is the equivalent of suggesting the way to correct a problem of authoritarian cops bullying the public over minor infractions is to add more cops.

Social systems are typically geared where adding administration creates a situation where the additional administrators try to justify their existence. They are not incented to lay off and stay quiet -- which is more of what's needed in this WC's officiating.

Typical Blatter boneheadedness. :disagree:

You can't use a chip to calculate offside, unless you put a chip in all of the players as well. And even then it's hard since a player can be subbed or be treated for injury outside the lines.

Lets just replace the old chipset in Refferes brains... sounds easier :p

I once heard someone on Voetbal Insite (back in the days when a studio audience and Barbara Barend hadn't ruined it yet) talk about some sort of technological system for offsides. That was of course before FIFA introduced 'passive offside'...
