Talk about Australian National squad, A League or players playing all around the world!

A League

www.a-league.com.au
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-League

Its only a few years old but already its showing good signs that it will be a successful league with high attendance rates for most teams.

After the 2006 World Cup the whole country went absolutely psycho when they had a moderately successful run with coach Gus Hiddink. They have some great players... Mark Schwazer, Tim Cahill and Harry Kewel being some of them.

the league should be interesting this year with the Sydney signings along with melbourne. I'm very disappointed with the level of advertising and promotion though as they didn't build it up to the level expected even with the pre season cup. We need to get more people to watch it from other codes, yet we see almost nothing on tv or the streets.

Jess VanStrattan greatest Aussie footballer ever! ;)
lol we're did we kick him to??
in Serie A theres Grella at Torino and Bresciano i think is still at Palermo.

Tis true, the A League hasn't done itself any favors by the lack of advertising especially when its still so young and it has such strong competition. And playing the games on pay TV isn't helping its cause at all.

A-League's enemies - AFL and Rugby League and a salary cap (big baddy!)

A-League's friends - the huge amount of European Australians.

It looks like its a haven for old "has-beens" of football who want to keep playing or brazilians who weren't good enough to cut it in the big time. Damn the salary cap!

    Victory win A-League pre-season cup

Melbourne Victory have claimed the first silverware of the A-League season, defeating Wellington Phoenix 8-7 in a marathon penalty shootout in the final of the pre-season cup at Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

Reigning A-League goalkeeper of the year Michael Theoklitos proved the difference between the two sides, making two spectacular stops during the second half and then saving Karl Dodd's penalty to win the shootout after 18 kicks.

Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz and Victory's Nick Ward had earlier blazed their spot kicks over the crossbar.

The match had finished 0-0 at fulltime, the Phoenix having slightly the better of proceedings before falling just short of becoming the first New Zealand club to claim a trophy in an Australian competition.

The home side fielded close to their best line-up with the only notable absentees being skipper Andrew Durante who sat out the match through suspension, while defender Tony Lochhead remained unavailable after recent trials with Middlesbrough.

Conversely ,Victory went into the match without a number of key squad members including regular captain Kevin Muscat, experienced midfielder Grant Brebner, plus Olyroos trio Archie Thompson, Leigh Broxham and Billy Celeski.

Goalscoring opportunities were rare with the match commencing in scrappy fashion on a greasy surface in front of over 9,000 fans who braved the chilly conditions.

Chances in the first half were largely a result of defensive errors with Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss misjudging a regulation Matthew Kemp cross and catching the ball at the second attempt as match officials ignored Victory appeals that the ball had crossed the line.

At the other end of the field Adam Kwasnik should have done better but headed over the crossbar after the Victory had left the striker unmarked from a free kick.

It was a match in which defence dominated with both sets of defenders solid throughout and former Socceroos Jon McKain for the Phoenix and Michael Thwaite for Victory particularly prominent.

The match sprang to life mid-way through the second stanza with Richard Johnson's stunning long range effort requiring an equally spectacular save from Victory goalkeeper Theoklitos.

Carlos Hernandez warmed the palms of Moss soon after with his own powerful strike from distance in what was a relatively quiet night for the Costa Rican international.

The best chance of the match came ten minutes from time with Phoenix's prolific striker Smeltz producing a diving header that saw Theoklitos at full stretch to tip the ball around the post.

    hehehe

yes we did play terribly but still managed to get the first goal. Thank god for our defense because the midfield were pathetic, losing the ball very easily and bad service to our strikers.
Its a good thing i don't give a shit about olyroos, but you've gotta ask...is this the national team of the future? Because it doesn't look good for us when our "star" striker is archie thompson who plays for a shithouse team "melbourne victory".
If we're going to look to the A League for our National team then we're screwed really.

It is concerning but Serbia have a very good team of the future as well. Like the A-league or not, it is the appropriate avenue to give those kids a chance. Burns, Djite, patafta, miligan and north all have good potential for the future and started in the a-league.

The A-league is a good competition to see whether these players have a chance of making it in Europe. Also with the Asian CL, the experience they get is much better than some of the obscure teams in europe.

But in that case, why play Archie? He's nearing the end of his career and he's stuck in the A League. I would rather play Patafta instead to give him some international experience and prepare for our real competition.
Miligan played poorly. You could say it was because of Serbia's pressure but we were making some real amateur mistakes: missing passes etc.

I found an interesting article last night about the Victorian Premier League, what once was the National Soccer League before A League was introduced. If you can be bothered reading it, i think it offers some food for thought about how the A League are killing off their competition.
I went to a South Melbourne vs. Richmond game last night where South suffered a 2 - 0 loss. It was emotional to say the least, before the 1st goal it seemed everyone was having a good time but afterward, the men who were leading the chants began to spill about how shit it is in the VPL and how low moral is for those who stayed loyal to their team and its especially emotional for South Melbourne who were once giants of Australian football playing Manchester United in 1999 against their full strength team losing only 2 - 0.
