so you think a club should keep a player on even when he is past it? so he can sit on the bench and get paid loads of money for it, disgrace if the player loved the club so much he wouldnt ask for that, he should retire gracefully.

If i know you well enough Nic, I'm pretty sure you're referring to us being sentimental about Alessio. Well, fact of the matter is, after 11 years, whether or not he was the most prolific midfielder on the team, he deserves to retire in the colours he still wears. He may not have been the best midfielder over the years, but what he lacked in talent he made up for in work ethic, and continued to be there through thick and thin. As half decent as he was, he could've probably upped and left a lot earlier in his career and made a lot more money than what Juve would've been paying him, in addition to the fact that he would've had a starting role in any mid table team anywhere in Europe. However, he chose to stay, and play the way he was asked. And when the case is such, then sentiment does come in to the picture. I know where you're coming from, when you say there probably isnt any room for sentiment, because none of Roma's players have really shown any love or respect for the club, when choosing to leave. Not many decide to stay either. So I guess this question will be rhetorical, when Totti's time comes around.

I don't think you can compare the two as players or their team contributions, certainly. But 11 years is a lot of service for one player to any club.

i wouldn't be surprised. chelsea's own stupidity, they should do what arsenal do and offer players over 30 one year contracts only, and sign on at the end of the season. saves ur self alot of trouble doesn't it?

Why... In real terms what has Totti done for roma... Im in no way discounting tottis ability as player ,as you well know i am a fan of totti as a player and a man, but his ability isnt the question here, its... what exactly is it you think hes done for roma thats so special ?

I jus look at other roma legends and to be fair totti cannot be compared... When you look at what the prince done... He changed the face of roma... a true legend of roma and the game as a whole, not jus an immensely talented player but so much more

Well, Totti will grow old eventually (right?!), so what do you think Roma will do when he is 34ish and he wishes to play and physically cannot provide the goods. Do you think Roma do? Ask him to take a discount and let him stay and take a reserve role and let him retire, or let him go to another club where he might earn more and play first team football.
I am happy that we let Alessio go, he served the club with his heart and frankly we can't offer him the playing time he deserves so we are quite happy to see him somewhere else playing reguarly and perhaps earning more.
