I don't think writing styles necessarily apply if you have enough passion and belief in what you want to say, I studied History for a while because English Literally and language was fully subscribed at the time and that is a different writing style to any type of journalism which was a field i wanted to get into prior to taking up Hospitality and Tourism management at Uni. It is always good to read other people's work that way you pick up styles a lot quicker, and even if you dislike the writer's style be critically as to why you hate his style and try and improve on that.

I'm not trying to be condescending, but this stuff does help your CV, especially if you are at uni/leaving uni,,i got my job because i wrote a newspaper column when i was 15-19.
