Nowadays, yes, there are only very rare cases where it makes sense from a medical point of view (not that it harms anything either), but back then, those infections where much more common. It's origins are still mostly to be understood from a ritualistic/religious angle, but you can find other reasons for it making sense (again, back then) as well. I mean you got plenty of legitimately crazy ritualistic stuff out there that's nothing else but mutilation (female circumcisions for example), but circumcising males isn't really one of them.
