Spanish Press trick Canna

Thursday 28 December, 2006
The Spanish newspaper Marca has played a nasty trick on Fabio Cannavaro, stating that the FIFA World Player of the Year award had really been won by Zinedine Zidane.

The former Juventus man was presented with the award on December 18 after pipping Zidane and Barcelona star Ronaldinho, only the second Italian to win the prestigious prize since Roberto Baggio in 1993.

Marca titled on Thursday morning that there had been a shocking mistake in counting the votes from the Coaches and captains of each national team under the FIFA umbrella and that therefore the winner of the trophy was the now retired Zidane.

The newspaper also reported that the Frenchman would receive the award during a ceremony in Munich on December 30.

After nothing was confirmed by FIFA, it seemed probable that the news was only a joke, as December 28 corresponds to April Fool’s Day in all Spanish-speaking countries.

“It is an April Fool,” stated the FIFA spokesperson Andreas Herren. “December 28 is the Day of the Innocent in Spain, which is April Fool’s Day in Europe. The FIFA World Player of the Year award belongs to Cannavaro.”
