A football fan in Pakistan has asked Goal.com to publicise the plight of his countrymen following the devastation caused by the recent massive earthquake in Pakistani Kashmir. What follows is not about football, but sometimes life – and death – transcend the beautiful game, and we make no apology for publishing this plea for help...
My name is Habib Abbasi. I am a big Football Fan. I live in Pakistan. The purpose of this email is to inform the world about the worst tragedy that happened in Pakistan on 8 October 2005, described as under, and to request your help.
The strongest earthquake that this region experienced in the last century has caused widespread damage across Pakistan. The epicenter was close to Muzaffarabad, just North of Islamabad, and also caused severe damage from both shaking and from landslides to Balakot, Garhi Habibullah and one village in Rawalakot in Pakistan.
At least 18,000 were killed and more than 41,000 injured in Pakistan. Most of the dead, were in the Pakistani part of Kashmir, followed by the North-West Province(NWFP) and other northern areas. Believe me, the death toll could be as high as 50,000, because many villages are washed out and completely destroyed. And they are unreachable. It will take time for the exact estimation of bodies.
The earthquake caused several apartment buildings in Islamabad to collapse, trapping hundreds of people. 250 children were killed in Gari Habi Ullaha between Manshera and Muzaffarabad when their school collapsed. Several villages were "wiped out". Most of the roads are closed in the Northern Sector near the earthquake, and some have been completely washed out.
Help has yet to reach many areas and the death toll is expected to rise.
Witnesses say most of Muzaffarabad has been destroyed or severely damaged. The city's cricket stadium is being used to house the homeless and tend to survivors.
There is no electricity, no telephones, food supplies are running short and medicines are scarce.
Trees are down and roads to Muzaffarabad are completely blocked following further landslides. Schools in the Mansehra district, around Balakot, have been particularly badly hit. At least 400 children are known to have died after the collapse of two schools in the area, but witnesses say many other schools have been flattened. About 200 soldiers are also thought to have been killed by landslides and falling debris.
I repeat: Help has yet to reach many areas and the death toll is expected to rise.
Believe me this tragedy cannot be described in words. I have no words to explain the feelings of the suffering people. Some fathers and mothers have lost their children, and some children have lost their families. Some people lost their whole families. Witnesses say there is difficulty in locating where their villages were because villages are totally destroyed and washed out by the strong earthquake.
I am a resident of NWFP Province where this tragedy took place. Fortunately my small village and family are saved. So I thought I must do some work for the suffered people. Then I thought I have to send my message to all the world and to the aid-providing organizations.
This is my appeal to the world, especially to rich countries and to rich people and to rich organizations that please help us. Our people are in shock today. They need your help. The orphan children calling for help, calling for food, calling for water, calling for medicines, calling for shelter and calling for protection.
With Best Regards.
