Yes, I meant smart as in clever

You can use essi and esse here, but normally you would say "loro". I believe that the pronouns essi and esse are quite dated, and rarely appear in spoken Italian. I would need Martin to confirm this

I checked the back of my pocket (Italian) dictionary for the pronouns. It did show 'loro' but it also showed 'essi' for 'men' of 'they' and 'esse' for the 'women only' form.

I am abysmal when it comes to endings.

If not dated then at least they are rarely used. The same goes for egli/ella as older forms of lui/lei.

It would have to be brevi because it's plural. But breve means brief, as in a short amount of time. When you're talking about height you want "basso", so basse in feminine plural.

breve only has two forms: breve, brevi

basso has four: basso, bassa, bassi, basse

When you see an adjective that ends in -e in the standard form/dictionary form then it's of the "breve" kind, like intelligente, interessante etc.
