It's been standard etiquette on the internet for as long as it's been around. I don't think it should really be enforced in these circumstances either, but some people persistantly post using them.

For who? Stuart, it's been in the rules since the beginning. It's not supposted to stop debate - mostly just a stick to beat the trolls with. Some people think being on the internet and being anonymous gives them free reign to attack and insult people in a fashion that would get them arrested...

No. It's been clearly stated dozens of times that that sort of thing isn't allowed. It just causes too much hassle. If you can't make your point without childish name-calling, don't make it.
