Bonucci's too old to leave for a fee, has a long contract with a hefty salary. No chance of him leaving.

The world cup is in 18 months time. So it had to be at least 18 months long contract. So we had to either let him go now or give that long a contract. A one year extension would make no sense from Chiellini's perspective.

Wanted him gone last year, but this renewal is a no-brainer. Good to see us give him a chance to play the world cup. He should be a bench option this season though. Need to invest in a replacement this summer or the next.

While Bonucci might not be an all time best, the fact that they have played together for a long time certainly helps Chiellini. The current Italian midfield is not that bad either.
