Empoli, Ancona, Reggina and Bologna are all teams that play men behind the ball. They're teams which we rarely defeat by more than 2 goals. In Italy for the big teams it's usually easier to play against the bigger teams as they give you more space to play.

You can't really compare the 95-98 period with this period. Back then there were less matches in the CL and to be honest, they weren't as hard as now considering that for 95 and 96 only the number 1 team from each league went through.

This season? Well for 15 minutes against Empoli, from the start against Reggina and in the second half of Bologna. Obviously the best way to judge them together is against Reggina and they actually did very well (Nedved's second goal came from Maresca's assist).

Of course, they already did. Maresca is extremely versatile and he can, just like Pirlo, play behind the strikers, in central midfield (or even on either side) and in front of the defence as a playmaker.
