Yeah, but they also give a lot in charity; money, food, etc. I'm going out of town on saturday so I won't be able to fast for the last 10 days so I'm giving "sadqa".

Ah, ok. I'll add that you're supposed to pray more while you're fasting (in Ramadan in general) but if you're just doing it for the experience of not eating/drinking then that's fine, just a bit pointless :D

Hmm...I've never heard of this hadith's authenticity being called into question. It's metaphoric in any case and there are plenty of other hadith to support the importance of pleasing your mother (and parents in general).

I have never seen a tradition like that before but the first thing that came to mind was the Hadith that 'heaven lies at the feet of your mother' :boh:
