Opportunity costs. It's not as if we'd have that money for Van Persie wages and it wouldn't be there otherwise. I could use the same argument to justify signing Borriello, just because we've got money doesn't mean we should waste it.

That's the worst case scenario of course, not the plan. If Van Persie doesn't work out, for which the chances are much higher imo, we'll be stuck with him and his high wages for years.

That doesn't matter. Van Persie's wages still mean a significant opportunity cost, money that could be used better somewhere else imo.
