I am on KUbuntu 9.04. I know about your problem, it was in the network. I had the same problem until I discovered Wicd. It's really great, so far it has never failed me.

Give it a try $ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop When logging in you can choose if you want your Gnome or your KDE environment.

They are basically the same operating system but each is running a different desktop environment. Kubuntu uses KDE and Ubuntu uses Gnome. There are a couple more desktop environments and it's all down to what you are comfortable with. So no, I would not say it's better, I just prefer KDE over Gnome.
