He's partly at fault, as are Gatti, Kalulu, Di Gregorio and Conceicao. A proper LB would recognise that 3 Fiorentina players are ahead of him to get the cross. He isn't a LB though and that's on Motta. He's playing like a midfielder at fullback.

At an individual level he did fine, he gets a goal and kept the ball alive for the second. At a tactical level it was a mess having him a LB. His positioning was all over the place and it often had a knock on impact on the positions the rest of the defence took up. But that's not really on him...

If we are going to play him it should be in the role Koop was playing. So either we move Koop back to CM or don't bring him on. He works well getting up in support of a striker but CM doesn't really work for him.

They definitely look like more of a team and one that knows its limits. Sometimes knowing that you aren't the best footballing team can bring a squad together as they know that they need to make up for it in other ways e.g. defensive organisation and work rate. Allegri said in his post match...

Far better as a wing back than a centre mid. His passing is really poor.

Thought he did well overall but his use of the ball was really poor at times, particularly in that 10/15min spell in the second half where we were under intense pressure. But he defended well and is doing better at blocking crosses, although still needs to improve on that.

He's not a CM. It exposes his biggest weaknesses and he doesn't look comfortable there. RWB limits those and makes the most of his running. He played better when he moved there. Poor game overall but his defensive headers were good.
