    [Serie A] Cagliari - Juventus (05/02/2011)

But they aren't even trying to mark. The full backs may still get beaten, but they may at least be able to stop the player scoring unchallenged. None of this is suggesting Juve can have a good defence until better players are brought in, but they could certainly be doing better than they are...

    [Serie A] Cagliari - Juventus (05/02/2011)

Good post. It's something I've been saying, but couldn't be bothered to take the screen shots to illustrate the point. The defence is too narrow and it causes two problems: 1. There is space round the side of the defence, but the opposition don't even have to go wide to find it. It only gets...

Goals may still be conceded from man-marking, but I believe less would be conceded from that than from zonal. Ranieri found a system that did a good job of hiding the weaknesses of Juve's defence. I believe Delneri's system is exaggerating the weaknesses in the current Juve back line.

    [Serie A] Cagliari - Juventus (05/02/2011)

People forget that Juve's defence was pretty damn good back then. The high line and the aggressive offside trap, with Sissoko running around like a madman kicking everything than moved in midfield, with the ever sensible Zanetti beside him all meant that the opposition had to work far, far...

    [Serie A] Cagliari - Juventus (05/02/2011)

All Juve seem to plan to do is pack numbers into the centre of the pitch and hope that that will prevent a goal. Playing a high line with zonal marking (and offside trap) would be fine and playing deep with man-marking would be fine, but playing deep, narrow and zonally is just a horrible...

That not marking goes for set-pieces as well. I've never liked zonal marking and a huge weakness of it was shown on the second goal against Palermo. If Chiellini is marking Migliaccio, he would have virtually no chance of scoring. However, because of zonal marking, Migliaccio was able to...

    [Serie A] Cagliari - Juventus (05/02/2011)

I like a narrow defence, for just the reasons you mention. However, Juve are taking it to the extreme and it makes them very vulnerable to crosses. There is a balance to be struck, and Juve are not getting it right just now. :agree: Too many people in a small area can result in no one...

    [Serie A] Cagliari - Juventus (05/02/2011)

It varies from game to game. Delneri's defensive system makes no sense for Juve. It was fine at Samp where he had a pretty mediocre backline, with no outstanding players, so it was fine for them to go very narrow and try to stop any player being isolated, because that was less of a risk than...

Grosso has been going almost as narrow as the RB, it's just that Marchisio/Pepe then often drops into what is almost an orthodox LB position, so that side isn't so exposed.

Actually, given Delneri's ridiculous system of defence - with everyone getting incredibly narrow - the fullbacks probably just about have to do as much defending as the CBs do. I really dislike how Juve set up to defend under Delneri.
