Read about it today, didn't know where to talk about it so decided to make a thread. Move please, if there's an appropriate thread. :p

Via Wiki:
New Zealand has a history of debate about whether the national flag should be changed. For several decades, alternative designs have been proposed - with varying degrees of support. There is no consensus among proponents of changing the flag as to which design should replace the flag. Unlike in Australia, the flag debate in New Zealand occurs independently of debate about becoming a republic.

The New Zealand Parliament has scheduled a two-stage binding referendum on potential flag change to take place in 2015 and 2016.

The first referendum is planned to take place from 20 November to 11 December 2015. It will ask voters to rank the four shortlisted flag alternatives in order of preference. The most popular design will contend with the current national flag in the second referendum.

The second referendum is planned for 3–24 March 2016. It will ask voters to choose between the current New Zealand Flag and the preferred alternative design selected in the first referendum.

Lately the Flag Consideration panel have announced the four alternative flag designs that New Zealand will rank in the first binding referendum this year:

This of course has so much potential.

Here you can find all of 10,292 submitted designs, some are freaking hilarious

I think it'll all end up pointless as the whole "Our forefathers fought for this flag" argument will end up winning any referendum against a new design. Which is sad because the NZ flag is stupid, and far too similar to the Australian flag, and at sporting events you'll see the silver fern on a flag more often than their actual flag.

Not to mention that bullshit argument that will be used to keep the flag really doesn't hold much weight. I think at the end of a day a flag is used to differentiate between countries, and if people can't differentiate between the NZ flag and the Australian one then it's not a flag which is doing its job.

Wow! Why would they want a new flag?
Their flag looks almost like Australia's one and they are tired of it, also as you can see by the chosen designs seems they don't want to have the Union Jack anymore. :D

Also because its pretty fucking identical to Aussies one thats including their former colonial masters. John Oliver is a joker, but he he is right on pointing out the obvious. Last festival I was at several New Zeelanders kept telling us how people kept telling them all over Europe oh you from Melbourne or Sydney after seeing their New Zeelander flag lol.

I've always liked both Australia's and NZ's flags. But they are quite similar. But then hardly more similar than, say, Monaco is to Poland or Mexico is to Italy or Slovenia to Russia or Netherlands to Croatia to France.

The thing that must stick in the craw of the Kiwis must be the Australian rivalry. So in some ways, the need for the change seems motivated by a sibling inferiority complex. Forget colonial masters.

In which case, it's a silly reason. I decree the Kiwis need to stop hating on their neighbors.

Just bumped into an article that this design is the preliminary winner:

A second referendum will be held in March to decide whether to adopt the new flag, or keep the existing one.
