Have you guys seen what's happening there? Pretty ridiculous. tl;dr version on the bottom.

Calais migrants 'becoming more violent' in attempts to reach Britain
Police say they are struggling to contain violence and crime by illegal immigrants encamped in and around the French port and desperate to cross the Channel

A Polish lorry driver opens his vehicle to find migrants from Eritrea hiding inside at a lorry park at the port of Calais

Illegal immigrants in Calais trying to reach Britain are becoming increasingly violent, forcing police to fire tear gas to disperse gangs as they attempt to storm lorry parks, officials have warned.
Gilles Debove, the Calais area delegate for the French police union, said tear gas was being used to stop "mass onslaughts" on vehicles about to cross the Channel.

"The other day, two to three hundred migrants tried to get into a lorry park and we fired tear gas to scatter them because there are too few of us to control situations like this any other way," he said.
"We're also facing an increase in crimes by migrants who mug people, steal mobile phones and carry out sexual assaults."

Police in the northern French port were overwhelmed by the steadily increasing numbers of asylum-seekers desperate to reach Britain despite the recent arrival of an extra 34 officers, he said.
Lorry parks are now ringed with razor wire and patrolled at night by guards and dogs.
But the manager of one site, Olivier Carre, said the police response to migrants was inadequate.
"Last week, a lorry entered with seven illegal immigrants," he said. "We called the police and they made them walk to the roundabout at the end of the road and went off."
Mr Debove said legal proceedings against migrants arrested for petty crimes often collapsed because of translation problems.
"When we arrest them, they speak English, but once they're charged, they refuse to speak anything but their own language and there's a shortage of interpreters, so we're often forced to release them," he said. Under French law, suspected offenders have to understand the charges against them so they can defend themselves.

Migrants from Africa are chased by French policemen (Reuters)

Up to 1,500 migrants, most from Eritrea and other impoverished African countries, are encamped in and around Calais, where they are fed and clothed by charities.
It is often impossible to deport migrants from countries such as Eritrea, which has been under UN investigation for alleged human rights abuses including extrajudicial executions, torture and forced military conscription that can last decades.
Philippe Wannesson, who runs a blog on the situation, suggested that France should offer the illegal immigrants asylum.

"1,500 people aren't that many for a country like France," he said, although he acknowledged that more migrants might then be encouraged to come.
Almost all of the illegal immigrants speak English and want to settle in Britain.
A local official said a few do apply for asylum in France "so they face less trouble from the authorities here while their applications are considered, but it doesn't stop them continuing to try to get to England."
The official, who declined to be named, said some migrants had been driven to reception centres at the other end of France after making applications, only to "walk out the next morning and make their way back to Calais".
Drivers, who are fined €20,000 (£16,000) if illegal immigrants are found in their vehicles, say the migrants openly try to break into their lorries.
"The moment the lorries stop, the migrants scramble aboard, even in broad daylight," said Arnaud Dequidt of the haulier Carpentier.

They are illegal immigrants, here for work.

Europe is doing some effords for the people who flee from ISIS.

Illegal immigration doesnt work. Belgium has plenty of evidence in that regard. Its important to be civically integrated. Else you are isolated, and that problem continues in further generation.

In my university, several well integrated immegrants are graduating this year. My Iraqi friend next year, who was top 5 in math this year apparently.

I don't get how the Calais immigration problem is any different than what's going on in Eastern Europe, across the Mediterranean, in Myanmar, etc. other than Brits are directly affected on the other side of it.

Well, they kinda accumulate by the thousands each day and try to aggressively get over the border by assaulting truck drivers, and getting in their cargo. That often leads to deaths by suffocation or dehydration, or cold, if they lock themselves in freezers.

The reason you see it, is the economical issue. Illegal immigrants who board a truck with food, will eat some of that food, and releave themselves between the food. AKA those shipments are contaminated and cant enter the foodchain, wich means a loss.

And that loss, is why its comming on the bigger agenda. Money.

We just had a Moroccan who suffocated in his brother's suitcase trying to get into Spain. And as for Myanmar, they're still uncovering mass graves in Thailand.

I honestly feel part of this reason this has gotten the press that it has is because many northern European countries have been able to be lax about immigration because it's normally not immediately at their doorsteps as it is in Italy, Greece, etc. Calais forces the issue for Brits who might otherwise think it's someone else's problem.

Well since alot of Belgian truckers need to pass trough calais we see it touch the press often. Its been a few years we've seen this.

Also happens in Belgium, at the final truckstop before entering france. Because of the big trouble they had there, they closed it now so they just run between the traffic when its jammed and try to break themselves into trucks, often resulting in accidents.

I will say however, that compared to previous years, the numbers have grown significantly.

I don't really know. Seems like England is the Emerald City for those guys.
That's because they hear stories of hand outs, which is only partially true. Most are processed and deported. The real issue is the traffickers in North Africa spinning the tales and taking essentially the life savings of these people to get them to Calais.

This has become a really bad situation now, to the stage where people are talking about the British Army stepping in. The French have basically given up at this point. These are desperate people and they have this idea that once they get onto British soil they are safe.

As far as Greece and Italy are concerned that is not true, it's an EU-wide issue and David Cameron has spoken out about. Obviously issues in Myanmar are a little outside of that remit.

Maybe so. I'd like to believe that the media do want to report about them dying.

Are you aware of the Dublin Regulation? Basically it states that the first country of entry is responsible for the asylum procedure. Given that almost all African immigrants travel through Spain and Italy (in particular Italy) it's an easy way to dump the burden on those countries.

immigrants? According to German media they are all refugees running from ISIS and consist of 90% women and kids hmmm

The vast majority of immigrants are economic immigrants looking for a better life. We deny these people asylum, because you can't get asylum for economic reasons, but you can hardly blame them. To be fair, what is refusing people to stay somewhere other than a discrimination based on nationality?

What's most ridiculous is that this is a global issue with many pressing socioeconomic factors and the UK is trying to fix it by bringing in soldiers and fences.

In the short term they are, but there is a push to take out the traffickers. Spooks and spec ops have been on it for months.

Right now the government are as bothered about allowing normal traffic and travel as they are preventing people coming in.

I imagine the answer is: hope.

People don't really know the conditions in a country until they actually get there and see for themselves.
Still no matter how bad the situation is in those Western European countries they seek asylum in, its almost always a lot better than the situation in their home countries.

Well, the question here is why are you so desperate to go to England? You're already in France. The living conditions aren't much different between the two.

That's perpetuated by the constant media portrayal of the lower and working class, because there are the same kind of lifestyle problems in those areas as you get in Walmart, US.
