Giorgio Chiellini sees Friday evening’s meeting with Napoli as a crucial encounter in this season’s title race and insists it will not be an easy task given the strength of the opposition.
The defender considered the importance of the contest when speaking to Sky Sport in an exclusive interview, which will be televised in full during tomorrow’s pre-match build up.
The 28-year-old said: “The match could go either way. It won’t be decisive because there is still a long way to go in the championship, but it will of course be important for both teams.”
Chiellini also remarked on Napoli’s progress as a side in recent years and discussed their impressive performances in last season’s Champions League campaign.
“There have been a lot of games since we met in Serie B and Napoli have improved immensely. They have an ambitious president, and since Mazzarri arrived, they’ve taken a further step up in quality.
“The club has not only become competitive in Italy, but also in Europe, as they showed last year over two legs against Chelsea.
“Yes they were knocked out, but they lost to the eventual champions and in fact, would have deserved to progress to the next round.”
The Italian international concluded by reflecting on last year’s encounter in Naples where the Bianconeri twice came from behind to snatch a 3-3 draw.
“It was that game which gave us the belief that we could win the Scudetto, even though it was still very far off. Then we achieved it, we won the title and we want to win it again.”
