Ahead of a hectic upcoming schedule, Marco Baroni has allowed his Primavera side to take a break until Saturday. Despite the exit from the Viareggio Cup, there are still three fronts on which the Bianconeri are competing for trophies: the league, Coppa Italia and Next Generation Series.
A run of twelve consecutive victories in the league has seen Juve climb to the summit of the table. The Primavera currently sit in pole position, seven points clear of Torino and also hold a nine point advantage over third placed Fiorentina. With only eight matches remaining, the team’s main objective is to finish inside the top two which would guarantee qualification for the national finals.
The Coppa Italia is another competition that has been taken very seriously by Marco Baroni. After overcoming Siena, Sampdoria and Torino, Juve booked a spot in March’s grand final for the second year running. This year, the team will be looking to go one better after stumbling at the final hurdle against Roma last season. The final will be contested over two legs, the first will take place in Turin on Wednesday 13 March and then all will be decided ten days later in Napoli on Friday 23.
March also sees the Juventus young guns return to action in Europe’s Next Generation Series competition. The Bianconeri were the only team to go unbeaten in the first round and they will now be pushing for a place in the quarter finals.
In the last 16 matches contested to date, there have already been some surprise eliminations as English sides enjoyed considerable success. Barcelona were knocked out by Chelsea in London, Liverpool were outclassed 4-0 on their home patch by Sporting Lisbon, Ajax succumbed to an away defeat against Aston Villa and then Tottenham overcame Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout.
Baroni’s side will face Rosenberg on March 7 in the final match-up of the last 16 round. Elsewhere, CSKA Moscow will pit their wits against PSV Eindhoven on February 27, then Olympiakos take on Anderlecht the following night. And lastly, on the eve of Juventus’ clash, Inter lock horns with Arsenal.
