Riccardo Montolivo (born 18 January 1985 in Caravaggio, Province of Bergamo) is an Italian footballer who plays for Serie A club Fiorentina and the Italian national team. He was appointed club captain during the 2009–10 season despite his relatively young age.

Montolivo is a prototypical "regista" (deep-lying playmaker), similar to Andrea Pirlo. Though he prefers to play in the middle, he can play anywhere including defensive midfield but is most comfortable in a more attacking role.

Club career

Atalanta

Montolivo started his career in Serie B with Atalanta. At the age of 18, he made his debut in the 2003–04 season. He played 40 matches and scored four goals during the season and helped Atalanta to gain promotion to Serie A.

In his first season in Serie A, he played 32 times and scored three goals. However, his efforts were in vain as Atalanta were relegated back down to Serie B. However, his performances had caught the eye of several higher-profile clubs.

Fiorentina

Montolivo moved to Fiorentina in the summer of 2005. Initially Atalanta retained part-ownership of the player but the following summer they relinquished that option as Fiorentina took full ownership.

During the 2006/2007 season Montolivo's first-team chances were limited, partly due to the fact that he was still an inexperienced player and partly because manager Cesare Prandelli had a relatively stable and reliable squad of players at his disposal. The young man's talents did not go unrecognised though. He became a fixture in Italy's Under-21 team, coached by Pierluigi Casiraghi.

The 2007/2008 season started well straight away for the Viola midfielder, in the first match day 2007–08 he was as one of the best on the field against Empoli, against which he also scored a splendid goal from a lob. The season follows between ups and downs, but Montolivo confirms himself during the course of the championship as one of the best talents in Italian Football. He has scored 2 goals this season.

In early 2010, due to the departures of then-captain Dario Dainelli and vice-captain Martin Jørgensen, Montolivo was appointed captain of the Tuscany-based club.

International career

On 10 October 2006, Montolivo scored the winning goal when Italy beat Spain 2–1 and qualified for 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. [1]

On 17 October 2007, Montolivo debuted for the Azzurri in a 2–0 friendly win against South Africa. He was also called up for Italy's provisional squad before the Euro 2008 tournament. However Coach Roberto Donadoni would eventually omit him from the final list of 23.

Montolivo was summoned by Pierluigi Casiraghi to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, scoring one goal in the tournament. After playing a bit-part role at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, he started all 3 games at the 2010 FIFA World Cup partnering Daniele De Rossi as a replacement for the injured Andrea Pirlo.

Personal

He holds a German passport, his mother is from Kiel and his grandparents live in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He speaks German.

Somewhat unusual for an Italian footballer, Montolivo has publicly stated he is an atheist.

The name "Montolivo" is derived from 'Mont' = mountain + 'Olivo' = olive oil

We'll never find a more greasy-pizza-worthy player. :strong:

He is neither Italian nor mediocre.
I just dont understand why we are only after Italian's , simply dont get it .
In pas italy had great players like :ADP,Totti,Cannavaro,Maldini,Nesta,Buffon
Im Azzuri fan but right now Italy dont have good players in market .

But right now only italian i would like to have in Juve would be : G.Rossi .

We have to look at France NT , they have great african/french talents like : M'Villa,Mousa Sissoko,Hazard etc . . .

Inler this season was fantastic on of the best MD in Italy . Melo-Inler in 4-2-3-1 would be awesome .

Marotta is living in the past, he apparently still believes that we are in the 90s and that Italy is still home to terrific talents.

I wouldn't be surprised if marotta makes this deal happen.. I read yesterday Marotta said yes to Aquaman but not for 16 million.. IF Marotta can't get his grocery store discount at liverpool then, he might just look into montolivo for a cheaper option only 6m compared to 16m and martinez goes.

As of now at this time I see no way to keep Aqua after he really pretty much hasn't offered us much... but, certainly not implying to get montolivo...

If i have seen what marotta has done with Juventus last summer I do think he is willing to bring montolivo here...
