Profile

Felipe Melo was largely anonymous to the casual fan until the 2008/09 season, when a series of dynamic performances for Fiorentina prompted Dunga to hand him a surprise call-up. The defensive midfielder made an imposing debut in February 2009, subduing Italy's Andrea Pirlo and his engine room cohorts as Brazil ran out 2-0 winners.

Overnight, Felipe Melo had fastened his place in the side for A Seleção's forthcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifiers, and after turning out in the 1-1 draw with Ecuador, he capped his third international with a splendid goal in the 3-0 defeat of Peru: winning the ball near the halfway line, he charged forcibly into the visitors' penalty area before subtly dinking the ball over the goalkeeper.

Born in Volta Redonda in 1983, Felipe Melo performed a subordinate function as Flamengo lifted the Campeonato Carioca and Copa dos Campeoes in 2001, and Cruzeiro enjoyed Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil glory two years later. He went on to represent Gremio, Real Mallorca and Racing Santander, before coming of age in the red and white of Almeria in the 2007/08 campaign.

This form convinced Fiorentina to part with eight million euros for Felipe Melo, who has duly vindicated this outlay. Industrious, comfortable in possession and firm in the tackle, he has established himself as one of the most well-rounded midfielders in the Italian Serie A.
