Goodbye Salvadore: Juventus in mourning

At the age of sixty-seven, Sandro Salvadore, star of the great Juventus side of the 60s and 70s, passed away during the night: “He was a champion of extraordinary class – remembered chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli – a real leader, inextricably linked to the Bianconeri colours. We are deeply saddened by his loss and we offer our most heartfelt sympathies to his family. Capitan Billy will be sorely missed”.

Salvadore arrived in Torino in the summer of 1962, joining Juventus from Milan in a highly publicised exchange for the winger Bruno Mora. For the next twelve seasons Juventus were blessed with a sweeper of notable temperament, peerless in his ability to marshal the defence. Capitan Billy was an eclectic defender, able to play in the centre or as a full back, and he also liked to get forward, scoring some important goals during his career. In his 450 appearances for the Bianconeri, Salvadore netted a total of 17 times. He won three league titles with Juventus, in 1967, 1972 and 1973, and a Coppa Italia in 1965. He was also a pillar of the Italian national side, making 36 appearances which spanned the 1962 and 1966 World Cups and their victorious European campaign of 1968.
