Former Depor boss Irureta signs on at Betis

MADRID, June 10 (Reuters) - Real Betis have appointed former Deportivo Coruna boss Javier Irureta as coach for next season, the Primera Liga club said on their website on Saturday.

Irureta, 58, coached Depor for seven seasons between 1998 and 2005 leading them to their only league title in 2000 and a King's Cup in 2002.

He also steered them into the Champions League for five consecutive seasons, but has not coached a club since leaving the Galician side in 2005.

One of the most experienced coaches in Spanish football, Irureta has also coached at Real Oviedo, Racing Santander, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo among others.

Betis did not renew the contract of coach Llorenc Serra Ferrer at the end of last season after they started their campaign in the Champions League and finished up fighting against relegation.

With Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stepping down at the end of June the deal was confirmed by Jose Leon, who is expected to come in as his replacement.

Irureta has agreed a one-year contract, with an option for another based on results, and will be officially presented on Tuesday.

About time Irureta began on a clean slate, he lost his way at Deportivo and what he really needs is a fresh start at a new club.

Best of luck to him and Betis.
