Inter defender Pierre Wome claims he could have been killed after his missed penalty cost Cameroon a 2006 World Cup place.

The left-back failed to convert a late spot-kick in the qualifier against Egypt at the weekend, an error which infuriated fans.

Wome had to be smuggled out of the country, while his house was vandalised and his wife’s hair salon was attacked by a mob.

"If I didn’t have a police escort then I would have risked dying," said the former Brescia stopper.

"I wasn’t that worried about me, because I have a strong character. But I was concerned about my family and friends. It could have ended really badly."

Wome went on to dismiss teammate Samuel Eto'o's version of events with regard to the penalty.

The Barcelona ace claims that he was ready to take the responsibility before Wome took the ball.

"Nobody wanted to take it so I decided to," he added. "What Eto’o has said is not true. Neither he nor the captain felt up to it. Only a few of my teammates showed me any solidarity."

The ex-Bologna man added that he has no regrets about his decision to step up to the spot. "I would do it all again if necessary," he added.

Meanwhile, teammate Luis Figo says he won’t be taking penalties anymore after he missed in the 2-1 win over Liechtenstein.

If Eto'o was going to take the PK and Wome took the ball from him and shot the pk himself, then I would beat Wome's ass also.

Eto'o was lying. I have seen the replay of the incident over and over again. The penalty was awarded in the 4th minute of a 5 minute injury time, and the Egyptian players protested vehemently. Eto'o went over to the Egyptian keeper, and spent an eternity talking to him, all the other Cameroonian players seemed disinterested, so Wome stepped up. I think Wome did what a man should do, Eto'o was scared shitless, as were Song and the rest of them....

In Yoruba they call what Eto'o did agbari! :yuck:

you can't blame any player for not taking the pk.....it's a HUGE responsibility....and here comes the coach's role...he should make a list of which player take the pk first and who's second, if the first isn't in the field and so on......

i bet every Cameroon player in that moment thought "i don't want that responsibility".....

Trust Eto'o to make himself look good due to the fact that cameroon didnt qualify. Whats all this I would have taken the penalty talk!? In a situation like that you want your best player taking it.

I agree CHX. Irrespective of whether Wome asked for it, Eto'o just didnt have the balls to take the penalty.

Which comes to my point, eto'o making the situation worse by stating what he said, so i dont blame wome in him comments. Lack of respect! Where's the professionalism here, all they had to do was keep there mouths shut and say 'It happens' Unlucky pierre wome! Anything Pfft!
