According to the German news agency SID, Emmanuel Olisadebe signed for Birmingham City :undecide: this Thursday [no date given].

Reports suggest the newly promoted Premiership club paid €5.3m for the player to release him from his contract with Panathinaikos. The former Polonia Warsaw player will net about €800k per year [which calculates to a respectable £10k weekly for the CM gamers out there].

Olisadebe joined Panathinaikos in 2001 but had recently lost his place in the lineup.

Should this information prove accurate [and apparently it has], Olisadebe will be the second Polish player to feature in the Premier League in the season of 2002/03. International goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek spent last season at Liverpool.

Dudek's transfer from Feyenoord to Liverpool so far holds the record fee for any Polish player. The English club parted with £5m [€7.8m] to recruit the 29-year-old at the time.

The previous transfer record was held by defender Tomasz Waldoch who joined Schalke in favor of Bochum in 1999 for 5.5m marks [€2.8m and the hell with all the different currencies!!].

Olisadebe arrived in Poland in 1997 along with a few other Nigerians signed up by agent Ryszard Szuster. He trained with both Wisla Krakow and Ruch Chorzow before joining Polonia.

"I realized the player had the potential to make a name for himself. He was pacey and his technical skills were of a high standard. President Janusz Romanowski decided to put up the required $150k [€150k] and Olisadebe signed for Polonia." The account of former national coach Jerzy Engel, who held the function of coach five years ago at Polonia.

The beginnings were challenging for the Nigerian. He was often deployed as substitute, sometimes he did not play at all. "At first, Olisadebe had to learn to play European style soccer, he started from the bench but adapted quickly", recalls Engel.

In July of 2000 President [of the republic this time] Aleksander Kwasniewski decided to grant Olisadebe Polish citizenship in an accelerated process.

Olisadebe made his international debut in Bucuresti where the Polish team tied the home side thanks to a goal from Oli. Subsequently, he netted twice in Kiev to settle an unexpected victory for the Polish side against group rivals Ukraine in the quals for the World Cup. Altogether, Olisadebe scored 8 goals [in 10 matches] to help the Polish national team qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years.

He scored once in the finals, in the match against the USA (won 3-1). Olisadebe now holds 11 goals in 19 caps to his name.
